Restaurant profile

Café Kitanishi had a modest beginning as an internet cafe in 2001 and has grown into what has been called "one of the finest Japanese restaurants and sushi bars in the entire Pacific Northwest".  We are located in Brookings, Oregon and recently opened at a second location in Gold Beach, Oregon.  In addition to sushi, we offer the freshest sashimi (flown in from Hawaii) and a full menu of traditional Japanese-Asian lunch and dinner entrees.  We also offer a unique selection of espresso drinks and homemade pastries.  Check out our menus online.

 

Summary

Being the owner/operator of my first restaurant, I spend most of my time cooking in the kitchen or managing the staff and the inventory.  Any spare time would be spent experimenting with new recipes or catching up with other operational tasks.  Since my husband was more familiar with computers, he helped me put together our simple one-page menu, which also serves as our takeout menu.  I also depended on him to make any changes--and there were many, especially during our restaurant's startup.  Then I found out about DinerMagic, a program for restaurants being developed by a local company.  They were still in the development stage and offered us the opportunity to be one of their beta testers for their product.  I asked Jeryl, one of our waitresses, to try it out.  I am happy to say that it everything that we could have ask for.  I always wanted to have classier-looking menus, but they were so expensive to have designed and it was not easy to make changes.  But now I finally have professional-quality lunch and dinner menu to show off to my customers.  And the neat part is that all three menus, including our takeout menu, are all updated at the same time.  To top it off, we have a really neat restaurant website that has our menus listed too!

 

Situation Analysis

When we started the internet cafe, we hired a local web designer to design our website.  It was pretty simple because we only served espresso and pastries.  However, our customers wanted more.  And I started offering some of my asian cooking.  There were a few Chinese and Thai restaruants in the area, but no Japanese restaurant within a 3-hour radius of Brookings.  My husband's grandmother taught me how to make sushi years before, and I decided to try that.  Before long, "Sushi Friday" became a hit!

 

However, as the demand grew to full lunches and dinners during the week, so did our menu.  Menu management was becoming a nightmare for my husband.  We looked into hiring a professional menu designer and web designer.  Hiring one or the other was going to be expensive enough.  But we couldn't find one that did both or who were willing to work with each other.  It was really frustrating!

 

That's when we heard about DinerMagic.  At last!  A solution to our problem.  Not only did it address both our menu and website redesigns, but it did so very affordably--only "a dollar a day", as their slogan says.  This was exactly what we needed.  It is a wonderful product and very easy to use.  I highly recommend it to other restaurateurs.

 

Investigation and Evaluation

When I was looking for a better solution to our menu management problem, I did find several menu designers.  But most were far from our rural location and I would have had to make an appointment and travel to Portland or the San Francisco Bay area.  Since we both had full-time jobs, this was not really practical.  Also, the prices that these menu designers were quoting was very high.  When I looked at what was available online, I did find some menu-creator software programs, and services that offered artwork and templates on a subscription basis.  But I would have had to learn how to use them and design my own menus myself.  I had neither the time or desire to do that.  Also, they really didn't offer much more than what my husband already did for me.  As far as my website, I would have had to contact the original designer of our internet cafe menu. to redesign it.  Or I would have to hire another and start from scratch again.  Both options were also going to be expensive.

 

Solution

Northwest Technical is a small local Internet Services Provider, and they were developing a software solution for restaurants.  When I saw their demo, I was sold.  Why nobody else has come up with this idea before, is unbelievable.
