Menu Design FAQs

The DinerMagic Team is comprised of restaurant owners, marketing specialists, graphic designers, artists, web developers, and programmers. While we don’t claim to “engineer” menus, we do closely follow trends in menu design and we do offer design services for our customers.

We do not subscribe that there is a “one size fits all” theory of menu design, however. For every claim of “this has to be done this way...” there is other criteria that needs to be considered. Many times the biggest factor is simply cost. Small restaurant owners simply cannot afford a full menu redesign by a menu professional. So a simpler yet effective way to redesign is needed.

Too, there is no magic bullet in any industry--the one “thing” that’s going to magically make lots of money-- and this includes your menu. That’s not to say that there isn’t room for impreovement or that some basic adjustments to a menu won’t do a lot to help. But to design a menu around a model that may or may not be proven, practical, or timely--and always expect positive results--is probably not realistic.

Too, customer perception should play a role in menu design--your customer’s perceptions--not some restaurant used as a test model elsewhere. Will your customers/market/demographic respond favorably to a design change? Most people like change, but not too much at one time. Change is good but too much can have negative effects. A lot of time a major change represents new management, new ownership, and often a perceived decline in quality. Planning a series of changes, small steps that allow the old customers to get used to while attracting new customers-- and increasing profits-- is a good plan.

But the Dinermagic Team believes that designs in good taste, appropriate to the restaurant’s theme and expectations, and makes a strong but realistic statement, will improve the bottom line of most restaurants.
